    The Representation of Amy Tan's Background in Her Novel The Joy Luck Club

    Discourse stylistics focuses upon the largely implicit and highly ideological ‘background’ of the text. Mind style that is one of the traits of stylistics is going to be taken into account of doing the analysis since this research aims to find out about how the mind style of Amy Tan is shaped by her background in her way of writing and producing the novel The Joy Luck Club. The term ‘mind style’ (Leech and Short, 2007) is particularly appropriate where the choices made are consistent through a text or part of a text.  This research is questioned whether or not Amy Tan’s Chinese background have influenced the novelist’s style as represented in her novel, The Joy Luck Club. This research describes the novel with a focus on the characters’ mind style in a stylistic and narrative approach. This research aims to attain the influence from the backgrounds of the novelist and the way the background affect the novelist’s style in producing literary work. The descriptions and explanations of scrutinizing the novel are hoped to provide examples of doing discourse stylistics to literary works. The specific use of Chinese words, the repetition use of pronouns, the presentation of Chinese superstitions have put so much contributions in shaping Amy Tan’s style in her works. Through her literary works, the novelist is able to show her readers linguistic journey through her wordplay style

    INTERLANGUANGE ANALYSIS: A RESEARCH ON ESL-SPEAKER'S STAGE OF ACQUISITION BASED ON THE PROCESSABILITY THEORY

                                                         AbstractThe research was conducted to find out the language acquisition of a person who learnt English as the second language. The research was done by using quantitative design. The subject of this research was a Korean who came to an English speaking country, Australia. The subject was first learned English when the subject was in junior high school. The data was displayed in the form of number with description in analysis part. The theory used was Processability Theory by Piennemann. Thetheory stated that at anystage of development, the learner can produce and comprehend only those second language linguistic forms that the current state of processors can handle.There are 6 stages of language acquisition proposed by Piennemann regarding the morphological aspect of language learners. The result showed that the subject was on the stage 5 of the Processability Theory. It meantthat the subject was able to produce the third person singular (-s). This stage decision is based on the stages of acquisition of nominal and verbal morphology in ESL by Pienemann (2007) and Johnston and Brindley (1988).Keywords: language acquisition, processability theory.                                                      AbstrakPenelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengetahui akuisisi bahasa dari orang yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan menggunakan desain kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah seseorang berkewarganegaraan Korea yang datang ke negara dengan bahasa nasional bahasa Inggris, yaitu  Australia. Subjek pertama kali belajar Bahasa Inggris ketika dia duduk di bangku SMP. Data disajikan dalam format angka dengan deskripsi di bagian analisis. Teori yang digunakan adalah Teori Prosesabilitas oleh Piennemann. Teori ini menyatakan bahwa pada tiap tahapan perkembangan, seorang pelajar dapat memproduksi dan memahami hanya format linguistik bahasa kedua yang bisa diterima oleh organ yang memproses bahasa. Terdapat 6 tahapan akuisisi bahasa yang disajikan Piennemann terkait dengan aspek morfologi dari pembelajar bahasa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa subjek berada pada tahapan 5 dariTeori Prosesabilitas. Hal ini berarti subjek dapat memproduksi struktur untuk orang ketiga tunggal (penambahanakhiran –s pada kata kerja). Keputusan pemosisian tahapan ini didasarkan pada tahapan-tahapan akuisisi morfologi nominal dan verbal pada ESL oleh by Pienemann (2007) dan Johnston dan Brindley (1988).Kata kunci: akuisisi bahasa, teori prosesabilita

    The purpose of this study was to describe the regularities of the American Postmodern Novelist: Alice Walker with a focus on a character’s and/or narrator’s mind style in a stylistic and narratological approach. This study aimed to attain the regularities from the American novelist’s literary work and how the regularities/irregularities occur in the novel to frame the style of the novelist in producing her literary work. This study was a descriptive qualitative by taken into account of stylistics categories and mind style which were applied to the Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. The data of this study were taken from Alice Walker’s novel entitled The Color Purple. The result of the study showed the occurrences and the forms of regularities in the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker which represented the style of the novelist in creating her literary work. The bold character of African-American Vernacular English that were found in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple showed that the novelist poured their mind style in their literary works by showing their stylistic options in producing the novel.     The aim of this study was to identify the regularities of Dan Brown’s novel: The Da Vinci Code based on stylistic and narratological approach. To attain the regularities/irregularities that occurred in the novel and to frame the style of the novelist, a qualitative research design was employed. The data were gathered from the novel; The Da Vinci Code, by taking into account of stylistic categories. The results of the study revealed the occurrences and the forms of regularities in the novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown which mirrored the style of the novelist. Dan Brown's powerful style is evident in the large number of noun phrases used in this novel. In every case, he uses noun phrases repeatedly and consistently. When describing a person's traits, he employs the noun phrase to point to occupations, specific names, locations, and items, and to designate personal pronoun

    The Correlation Between Writing Motivation and Writing Achievement

    Motivation is an important element in learning, especially in writing. It can affect the achievement of learning. This study is conducted to analyze the correlation between students’ motivation and achievement in writing. The purposes of this study are : (1) to find out the level of writing motivation of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. (2) to find out the level of writing achievement of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. (3) to find out whether there is a correlation between writing motivation and writing achievement of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University. The researcher utilized a correlational design in this study. The population of this study was taken from the sixth semester students of English Department, whereas this study used 25 students as the sample. The instruments of this study were Academic Writing Motivation Questionnaire and score documentation of Writing. This study used an analysis of Pearson Product Moment correlation to find out the result of hypotheses. There were three result of this study. First, based on the calculation of Academic Writing Motivation questionnaire, it was shown that the level of writing motivation of the sixth semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University was in low category. Second, the analysis of writing score documentation shown that the level of students’ writing achievement of the sixth semester of English Department of Mulawarman University was in low category. Third, based on the data ofwriting motivation and writing achievement, it was shown that r value is .902 with a significance value of .000 < 0.05, so Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It was assumed that writing motivation and writing achievement have a relationship

    This research deals with prejudice in the Detroit film by Kathryn Bigelow. Prejudice is the negative assessment or hostility toward an individual or group resulting in negative treatment. There are so many negative treatments from the prejudice portrayed in the Detroit film. In this research, the researcher analysed the prejudice aspects through the characterization of the characters experiencing negative treatments in the Detroit film. This research was conducted by using a qualitative research design. The data were generated from the speech, thoughts, effect, action, and looks of the characters portrayed in the film. The researcher revealed that the negative treatments in Detroit are committed by the white people police officers and experienced by the black people citizens. In conclusion, four negative treatments experienced by the characters were anti-locution, discrimination, physical attack, and extermination. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the difference between both races such as their skin tone, or the types of their hair is what generated prejudice in Detroit film

    This study analyzes the concept of masculinity by Brannon in the novel Heroes of Olympus: House of Hades. The purpose of this study is to describe how forms of masculinity are displayed through the character of Percy Jackson in his practice of applying the behavior of a man in responding to his surroundings. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research design. The data are in the form of narration and dialogue, which are related to forms of masculinity. Data analysis used Brannon theory and then the data analysis process used Miles and Huberman's theory. In the results of this study, researchers found forms of masculinity used by Percy's character for the sake of protecting his friends and lovers from Percy himself. Therefore, Percy Jackson and his masculinities can be taken as representative of human nature in general in terms of being a gentleman for others which is also common happen in current society
